Installation
WinChloe installation is very easy to follow.  There are no special instructions.  Merely take the installation defaults offered and you should not run into any problems.

Hints
  Database Info
To avoid problems you should never work directly in the Echecs database.  If the database becomes corrupt you will have to uninstall, then reinstall WinChloe.  One thing you could do is make a copy of the Echecs database and use that as your database.  It is also advisable to copy problems out of the database and put into a new database to work on.

  Multiple Computers
If you have two computers you can install WinChloe on both.  But first you must deactivate WinChloe ("Desactiver WinChloe" in the menu "?" (Help) on the first computer.  Also, you will have to register again when you open WinChloe on the second computer.  Therefore the second computer must be connected to the internet to register.  After that, you may run WinChloe on either computer without being connected to the internet.

Filtering - Queries
  Stipulations & Aims
To get the translation of most of the stipulations and aims, select 'Stipulations' or 'Buts' in the menu 'Table Auxiliares'.

In the above the filter for the stipulation and aim indicates that you are looking for problems that are either direct Series  (Direct de serie), Help series (Aide de serie) or Self series (Inverse de series).  Note the bracket before the first stipulation and after the last stipulation.  Also you are searching for problems that involve only mate (Mat) or stalemate (Pat).  Again note the brackets before the first 'But' and after the last one.  The 'Nombre de pieces neutres = 0' indicates the problem may not contain 'neutral' pieces.  The 'Colonnes = 8 and Rangees = 8' indicates the problems must be for a standard 8x8 chess board.  This filter will extract out any direct, help, or self type series problem in which either mate or stalemate occurs.  The board must be an 8x8 and no neutral pieces are involved.

Now we add a few queries to the above filter.  'PAS de Conditions feeriques' removes and fairy conditions, and 'PAS de Pieces feeriques' removes any fairy pieces. If you want to save and use this filter in the future, go to the Filtres & Requete menu and select 'Ouvrir Filtre+Requete' and select the saved filter.

Go to the Filtering Instructions page for some additional help.

    Q.  What I would like to do is copy any of the series move problems in the Echecs database over to the new database. I am only looking for series mover problems without any special rules or fairy pieces.  How do I search and copy them over?

First, you must open the table 'Echecs' and then create a filter (filtre) and a query (Requetes).

1. In the menu 'Filtres & Requetes', click on 'Filtre'.

2. Select 'Stipulation' in the left zone and double-click or use the 'Enter' key, then select '=' in the right zone (always double-click or 'Enter') and then select 'Direct de Serie' (and use the 'Enter' key, as double click does not work here.

3.  Then select 'Ou' (=or) and 'Stipulation' '=' 'Aide de serie", 'Ou', 'Stipulation' '=' 'Inverse de serie', etc.  Continue to select your stipulations.  End the last stipulation with 'Et'.

4.  Go back to the first 'Stipulation' and click in the first stipulation box.  This will put a parenthesis in the first box.  Go to the last stipulation and click in the stipulation description box.  This will put a right parenthesis ')' in that box directly before the 'Et' box.

5.  Now move on to your 'Aim' (But') in put in the list of your various aims (i.e. # Mat, ## Double Mat, = Pat, == Double Mat, etc.)  You could also leave any 'aims' out of the filter.

6. Now I want to filter out all problems other than those that are played with normal pieces on a normal size board.  In the filters screen, select 'Nombre de pieces neutres' (# of neutral pieces) and set to = 0.  Since I want a normal 8x8 board, select Colonnes (columns) =8 and Rangees (ranks) =8.

7.  When your filter is finished, select OK.  The program will now select all the problems with the above stipulations.

8.  To eliminate the problems with fairy pieces or conditions, we have to create a query (Requete).  In the same menu 'Filtres & Requete', click on 'Requete' and select 'PAS de Conditions feeriques', =, Et and 'PAS de Pieces feeriques'.  This query mean 'No fairy conditions' and 'No fairy pieces.'  Your filter and query are now complete.  Click OK.  The program will perform the query on the problems in the filter.

9.  You can now save this Filter & Query for later use by going to 'Filtre & Requete' and select 'Enregister Filtre + Requete'.  Give your filter a unique name.  An extension of '.frq' will be added to the filter & query file name you assign.  Save your newly created filter in the WinChloe\Requete directory.

10.  If you want to use this filter in the future, go to the Filtres & Requete menu and select 'Ouvrir Filtre+Requete' and select the saved filter.

11.  To cancel a filter or a query and return to the full database of problems click on 'Annuler le filtre', (Cancel the filter), 'Annuler la requete' (Cancel the query), or 'Annuler filtre + requete' (Cancel the filter and query) in the menu 'Filtres & Requete'.

12. To copy the selected problems, use "Copier dans une autre table" in the menu "Fichier", select "Tous les enregistrements filtrés de "Echecs.DB", press OK, and then select the table in which you want to copy the problems.

13.  Now you have created a new database of filtered problems.

(NOTE: The webmaster has created a Filter + Query to extract all series movers problems with no neutral pieces on an 8x8 board.  The series types filtered are direct series, help series, and self series.  (No reflex, etc).  No aim has been included on the filter (unlike the above example).  Therefore it will filter for mate, stalemate, double stalemate, capture, check, etc.  Click here to get the filter to use within your own WinChloe program.)

bulletCopy the text from the new page that opens up into Windows Notepad.
bulletSave the file.  Give it the name 'SeriesMovers.frq' and save in your WinChloe Requetes folder.  If Notepad won't save using the extension .frq, save as a text (.txt extension).  Then using Windows Explorer go in and rename the file to SeriesMovers.frq.

Additionally, the webmaster used that filter and has extracted (26 November, 2004), all problems from the WinChloe master Echecs database.  The 'SeriesMovers' database has been placed in ZIP format, but it still rather large (1.5 megs).  You may download it hereYou must have WinChloe installed on your computer to use either the available Series Movers Filter + Query or SeriesMover database.  There are currently 4,620 problems in this filtered database.

About Filters and Queries

Filters and Queries are two ways to select only some problems of a table. Queries use SQL language and are slower than Filters but are able to involve fields which are not treated by filters.

In big tables, like the "Echecs" table, navigation becomes very much slower when a filter or a query is applied. It can then be interesting to copy all the filtered problems in another (empty) table. It will be easier to browse the problems in that table.

It is possible to define simultaneously a filter and a query. In that case, by default, a record is selected if it verifies the filter AND the query. But if the menu "Filtre OU Requête" is checked, a record is selected if it verifies the filter OR the query.

To cancel a filter and/or a query, select "Annuler le filtre" or "Annuler la requête" or "Annuler Filtre + Requête" in the menu "Filtres & Requêtes".

When a filter and/or a query is defined, and if a new table is opened, the filter and/or the query will be applied to that table.

  • Ouvrir Filtre+Requête : To open an existing Filter and/or Query file (with the extension 'frq'). Some of these files are already available when WinChloe is installed. These are :
#2 orthodoxes : To select only orthodox 2-movers.
#3 orthodoxes : To select only orthodox 3-movers.
#n orthodoxes : To select only orthodox more movers.
h# orthodoxes : To select only orthodox helpmates.
s# orthodoxes : To select only orthodox selfmates.
Miniatures : To select only miniatures (problems with a maximum of 7 pieces).
Cyclone : To select only problems showing one of the following cyclic themes : Lacny, Dombro-Lacny, Kiss, Djurasevic, Zagorouïko cyclique, Le Grand cyclique, Anti-Reversal cyclique, Anti-Reversal-menace cyclique et Erokhin doublé.
Retros : To select only problems having a retro element.
Vielvater : To select only problems having only 4 pieces on a7, a8, b6 and ç8.

  • Enregistrer Filtre+Requête sous : To save the actual Filter and/or Query. If you always use the same filter, or query, or combination of filter and query, you can save it.
  • Filtre rapide : To quickly create a filter using some fields of the selected record.
  •
    Liste Screen Printing
        Q.  Can I sort the Liste screen and print out information from the database?

To sort, use 'Trier' in the menu 'Problemes'.  To print, use 'Copier l'ensemble (RTF) in the menu 'Edition' and then paste in Microsoft Word.

    Solving Problems
        Q. After I have the position entered and the stipulation and aim entered, how do I solve the problem?

To solve a problem, use the menu "Resolution" : "Resolution" (or "F7") to directly solve the problem or "Option pour la resolution" to select solving options, or even "Resolution (DOS)" if you want to use the old Chloe procedures (they don't use hash tables but have an intelligent mode.)

    Q. I notice that when I press f7 to solve in Windows it takes quite a long time or does not solve.
this depends of the kind of problems, but usually, for series help problem, DOS mode, with its intelligent search of solution is quicker.

    Q. If I press ALT+f7 the solution time is very quick. I solved a problem instantly, but the solution was not in English.
See my answer above (DOS mode will also give a French solution).

    Q. What do the various options in Resolution do?

    Jeu apparent = with setplay

Jeu apparent seul = only setplay

Number of "refutations" is excellent option for two movers, if have tries variantes avec/sans menaces = searching of threats/or without threats

Hash table = you can select, how much memory can program use. For more movers I recommend maximum (over 50%), but for short problems not necessary more memory (for example if you solve 100 two movers, can in this case solving delayed for multiple clearing of hash memory)

Arreter.. = stop after N solutions (I recommend set to 20, for elimination of many cooks)

Rechercher les themes = you can disable this (excellent) feature.

    Résolution - Solving Misc

There are 3 ways to solve a problem with WinChloe :

The default one, (called the "Windows" solving in this help) : more than 500 conditions and 700 pieces, and using hash tables.

bullet"Windows" solving (Press "Esc" to interrupt)

bulletRésoudre : to solve the problem using the options defined in Options pour la Résolution.
bulletOptions pour la Résolution : Options for "Windows" solving.
bullet Résoudre tous les problèmes de... : To solve all the problems, or all the filtered problems, of the opened table, using the options defined in Options pour la Résolution.

Using the old "Chloe" programs, (called the "DOS" solving) : faster than the Windows solving (except when hash tables are very useful, i.e. when there are few pieces) and having an intelligent mode for helpmates.
But only the most usual pieces (such as Grasshopper, Nightrider, Lion, Leo, Pao, Vao, Zebra ...) and conditions (Maximum, Circé, Madrasi ...) are available.

bullet"DOS" solving (Press any key to interrupt)

bulletRésoudre (DOS) : to solve the problem using the options defined in Résoudre (DOS) avec options.
bulletRésoudre (DOS) avec options : Options for "DOS" solving.
bullet Résoudre (DOS) tous les problèmes de... : To solve all the problems, or all the filtered problems, of the opened table, using the options defined in Résoudre (DOS) avec options.

Using "Natch" (only for orthodox proof games).

bullet Résoudre avec Natch : to solve with Natch. For the options, see the documentation given with "Natch", also available from the Natch homepage.

    Fairy Pieces - Solving

And one remark more about F7/ Alt-F7. WinChloe knows many fairy conditions, but only in Windows mode. In DOS solving mode (after Alt-F7) is possible only little subset of these conditions.

Final Position – Play Through Solution
        Q. Is there a way, once the problem is solved, to easily view the final diagram?  In longer series movers the board position changes quite a bit.  I would like to be able to see the final diagram.  If this is possible, can I always capture the FEN notation for the final diagram?

In "MODE REDACTION" in the screen "Diagramme & solution", you can play a move on the diagram (drag and drop with the mouse) and this move is written in the solution. So if you want to see the final position, you can play the solution until the last move (of course this function is especially used for problems which can't be tested by WinChloe, to have a clean solution). At that time, open the page "Echiquier", select the text in the Forsythe zone and copy it (Ctrl+C or right-click and 'copy'). Click on 'Quitter' to leave the "Mode Redaction".  As a further suggestion you can copy the final position from the Forsythe zone and paste in the Comments field in the Info Screen.  This way you can later go back and instantly have a FEN of the final position.

    Copy Selected Problems
To copy the selected problems, use "Copier dans une autre table" in the menu "Fichier", select "Tous les enregistrements filtrés de "Echecs.DB", press OK, and then select the table in which you want to copy the problems.

    Language
        Q. How do I set a default setting for English language solutions?

In the menu "Résolution", click on "Définition des PiPces" : With the mouse, select 'Roi' in the list and type 'K' in the "Code" field, then click on 'Dame' and type 'Q' in the "code" field...etc.  Don't modify the other fields and be very careful : it is not possible to cancel a modification.   And this will only be effective for the new problems you solve (and not in DOS mode)

    Q. I thought this would set the setting to English.  I have tried doing ‘Toutes les solutions des enregistrements de (database) and Seulement la solution de l’enregistrement en cours. Neither seem to work.

It does not set the default language : it replaces "R" with "K", "D" with "Q" etc... in the solutions.

    Q. In the Echiceques screen I can change the notation down the bottom. How do I make the program automatically default to the language I want (English) every time I run WinChloe? Or must I manually change my setting each time I run WinChloe to get the notation I desire?

Until now, you must change the setting each time. But I've modify the program so that the last language used is the default language when you reopen WinChloe.  To download this new version, click on "Mettre à jour WinChloe" in the menu "?".

    Special User Category Fields

    Q. I might want to add a code 'A' for 'underpromotion', 'B' for 'Babson', 'C' for piece shield, 'D' for 4 corner king walk, 'E' for piece shuffling, etc.  Regardless, they would probably be one letter codes that would mean something to me.  My question is this - which field would you suggest I use to put something like this in?  I should probably use a field that isn't often used.  I was thinking about 'Juge' or Jugement.  If I start entering my own codes, would I be able to sort for them at a later time.  Let's say I wanted to find only one specific code; would I be able to search for that code later?

Most of these themes are already in WinChloe ("Thèmes" field). If you want to use your own codes, you can use may be the "Commentaires" field : you'll not have the possibility to sort, only to make a "Requête".

    Etiquette Box
        Q. In the INFOS screen what should be placed in the Etiquette box on the top row? Can this be used as I wish?

You can place 5 characters which will appear before the name of the author. Used mainly for edition (originals, articles or books) : you place there the number of the problem.

The index uses the field "Etiquette" : if this field is empty, a problem will not be indexed. You can use the function "Auto-Etiquetage..." to fill this field quickly. For instance, if the problems are coded B1, B2, B3 etc... :
    1) "Problemes" -> "Auto-
    etiquetage..."
    2) "Prefixe?" : enter "B" and OK
    3) "Commencer par le n°" : enter "1" and "OK"

And then, you can create the indexes. If the problems don't use the same 'prefixe' (as in FIDE albums), you must use filters and/or queries to separate each group.

    Sharing Your Database With Others
When you have finish to record problems in a (thematic) table, send it to Christian Poisson via email.
If the table name is 'Example', what you have to do is to send the 7 following files which are in the 'Base Chloe' directory :
    Example.DB
    Example.MB
    Example.PX
    Example.XG0
    Example.XG1
    Example.YG0
    Example.YG1
Of course, it is better to compress them in a zip file : transfer via email will then be much faster.
If you can't compress the files, don't send tables with more than 500 problems.
If you can compress the files, you can send larger tables, until 3000 problems.

    Compress - Compact Databases

    To compress tables.
Compression allows to minimize the size of the tables and to improve the efficiency of filters and queries. Without being compulsory, it may be interesting to compress (especially the big tables) from time to time.
Compression is also a way to recover a corrupted table.

bulletCompacter la table en cours... : Compress the opened table.
bulletCompacter toutes les tables... : Compress all the tables which are in the "Base Chloe" directory.
bulletCompacter les tables auxiliaires... : Compress all the tables which are in the "Base Chloe\Auxiliaire" directory.

    View Final Position of Problem
To view the final position in Winchloe, you must replay the problem.
In the diagram and solutions screen, take the menu Solution then Mode Rédaction (that means Writing mode) or press Ctrl+F12.
Then you can play the solution moving the pieces.
You have normally a little window for special features :
    - sans rédiger = Without writing. It's only playing without writing the solution; It's a switch (On/Off)
    - Nouvelle solution = New solution (for making a new flow)
    - Passer = Pass (allow to play twice or more with the same color; Useful for Threats)
    - Jeu apparent = Set play
    - Coup précédent = backward move
    - Trait aux Blancs (aux Noirs) : to change the side to play
    - Retour à la Ligne : LF (Line feed)
    - 1... (Write a 1...)
    - Blocus (Write Blocus, zugzwang)
    - [ or ] (Write the symbol)
    - Quitter : To quit the mode

When you are in a certain position, you may go the the Echiquier tab and then the Forsythe of this position (and the position description) is updated. You can copy it (Crtl+C and Ctrl+V) after selecting it.
