| Here are some brief notes on how to
use Alybadix. Disclaimer: I rarely
use APWin or fairy pieces or conditions, so am not qualified to give
any kind of tutorial in those. I recommend that you PRINT these
directions, since it'll be hard to flip back to this email when
running Alybadix. NOTE: These directions are by no means
'comprehensive'.
INSTALLATION:
 | Create a folder on
your hard drive: c:\ Aly2004 (or whatever version you have; mine is
2001) |
 | Copy all files on
your CD to
c: \Aly2004 |
PREPARATION:
 | Go to your
c:\ Aly2004 folder |
 | Locate and
right-click the AP.EXE file, then select 'Create Shortcut'
|
 | Locate and
right-click the shortcut, then select 'Cut' |
 | Go to a blank area
on your Desktop, do a right-click and select 'paste' |
 | Your shortcut to
AP.EXE should now be on your Desktop |
STARTING ALYBADIX:
 | To run Alybadix,
just double-click the shortcut |
 | Hit <Enter> at the
1st and 2nd screens |
 | Enter your
password on the 3rd screen (should be first 3 letters of your last
name) |
BEFORE TESTING -- from Alybadix
(Non-Fairy) Main Menu:
 | Type 'X', then
select the genre to test, then click <Esc> to return to the Main
Menu |
 | Note: hit 'X'
twice (from Main Menu) to switch to FairyBadix; 'X' twice again to
return |
 | Type '7' (New
Notation) if you want to change input or output notation
|
 | Type '8' to adjust
set/play options; use 'Setplay Only' for (eg.) a h#3½ |
 | Type <F1> to view
the current diagram; <F1> again to return to the Main Menu
|
 | Type <F2> to view
current diagram & tries/solutions; <F2> again to the Main Menu
|
SETTING UP THE POSITION -- from
Alybadix Main Menu:
 | Type 'N' to enter
a NEW diagram, or 'A' to edit the current diagram AGAIN |
 | Use the arrow-keys
to move the cursor to particular square |
 | For a WHITE unit,
hit KQRBSP *one* time |
 | For a BLACK unit,
hit KQRBSP *two* times quickly |
 | Hit 'Delete' to
erase a square; hit 'Delete' on an empty square to restore that
piece |
 | Hit <Esc> and '7'
to change colors of all units |
 | Hit <Esc> and '8'
to reflect the position (left-to-right) |
 | Hit <Esc> and '9'
to rotate the position 90 degrees clockwise |
 | If using
FairyBadix, hit <F1> and scroll to locate the fairy piece to enter

TESTING THE POSITION:
 | When you're done
setting up the position, hit <Enter> |
 | At first screen,
enter problem-length; if more than 9 moves, hit 'A' then
problem-length |
 | You'll be
automatically taken to the next screen, "Test Menu"
|
TEST MENU options -- General:
 | Hit 'A' for
'Model/Ideal-Mate' stipulation |
 | Hit 'N' for
Madrasi or Rex-Inclusive |
 | Hit 'C' for Circe
|
 | Hit 'M' for maxi-
or mini- stipulation |
 | Hit 'T' or
left-arrow or right-arrow to searching only for mate on certain
square(s) |
 | Hit 'I' for
'Intelligent mode' solving; great for long h#, h=, ser-h#, ser-h=

 | Hit <F4> to CLEAR

TEST MENU options -- Mainly for
direct- and self-mates:
 | Hit '4' to set
'White Must Check' options |
 | Hit '5' to set
'Black Must Check' option |
 | Hit '6' to set
'White Cannot Capture' options; you can specify ANY capture, or a
specific unit (square) |
 | Hit '7' to set
'Black Cannot Capture' options (for h# and ser-h# only) |
 | Hit 'O' to set
White Promotion options |
 | Hit 'P' to set
Black Promotion options |
 | Hit 'F' to set
'max # of Black King Flights' possible after any defense

 | When you're done
entering TEST MENU options, just hit <Enter> to start testing. If
you ever want to STOP a test, just hit 'S'. You can hit 'C' to
CONTINUE the test from there. But... once you change a position (or
enter the setup diagram), you cannot use 'C'. |
SAVING a test -- from Main Menu:
 | Hit 'Z' (Disk
menu), then hit 'S' (Save), then hit 'S' (Solution); enter the
8-byte file name to save |
LOADING a test -- from Main Menu:
 | Hit 'Z' (Disk
menu), then hit 'L' (Load), then hit 'S' (Solution); enter the
8-byte file name to load |
